What are bumper plates?
Bumper plates are solid rubber weights that are made to drop. All size bumper plates are the same diameter across the plate at 450mm. This means the 45 lb bumper plate is the same diameter as the 35lb,25lb,15lb and 10 lb bumper weight. This is very different than cast iron weights which become smaller in diameter as the plate weight size drops. Bumper plate width changes, the heavier the weight the thicker the plate. ISF bumper plates are made with a highly durable, dense virgin rubber so the plates are thin realtive to many competitors. This let's you load more plates onto the bar. ISF 45lb bumper plates are 2.8" thick. The ISF 10lb bumper weights are 1" and other sizes are in between. Bumper plates come in some of the same sizes as cast iron plates, they share in the 45lb,35lb,25lb, and 10lb size weight, however bumpers are not made smaller than 10lbs. There are no 5lb or 2.5lb bumper weights for example. Unlike with the steel weights, bumpers do come in size 15lb.
Benefits of Bumper Plates
Bumper plates protect the floor and are more quiet than iron weight plates because they are made of solid rubber. This means that your floor is less likely to dent or scratch from the use of bumper plates over weight plates made of iron or steel. Because of the solid rubber build, bumper plates are also made to drop. This comes in handy if you do olympic lifts like cleans or snatches, or if you want to drop the deadlift from the top, or even if you're simply moving weights around on the floor. ISF Bumper Plates are made with recessed, knurled edges so picking up those rubber bumper plates from the floor is a breeze. Our plates are suitable for your home gym or crossfit gym.
Why bumper plates?
Bumper plates serve the same fundamental purpose as cast iron plates, which is to lift weights. If you are wondering whether to purchase cast iron weight plates or bumper plates you should ask yourself if you want to be able to drop your weights, if you want them to be more quiet, or if you need to protect your floors from damage. If you answer yes to any of those considerations then bumper plates may be right for you.
What barbell should I use with bumper plates?
All ISF Bumper Plates have 2" diameter holes. This means you will need to choose a high quality olympic barbell with 2" sleeves. Any ISF barbell will do the job so be sure to add a high quality ISF Barbell either Men's 20KG - 45LB or Women's 15KG - 35LB Bar to complement your weight plates! Go to barbells here.
Bumper Plates Vs Iron?
The main difference between rubber bumper weights plates and iron (aside from material composition) will be dimensions. The diameter of bumper plates will be bigger for all sizes 35lbs and under, and bumper plates will be thicker. This means if you are super strong, you'll need to be sure you can load enough plates onto the barbell. All ISF Barbells can max out with 5 45 lb plates per side plus a couple inches to spare for another plate like 10s and collars.
